Overview

Why do some startup ecosystems consistently produce successful ventures while others struggle to gain momentum? This study tackles that question by mapping the forces that shape entrepreneurial success, focusing on how government support, incubation, regional characteristics, and collaborative networks work together rather than in isolation from one another.

Synthesising a wide body of empirical and conceptual work from across the 2012 to 2024 period, the research draws out the drivers that most influence outcomes. Financial incentives, infrastructure support, entrepreneur-friendly regulation, and effective government policy emerge as the foundations, while incubation, including mentorship, access to funding, and networking opportunities, proves crucial for helping early-stage ventures find their feet and survive their first years.

Regional conditions matter too, from cultural attitudes towards risk to proximity to markets and the availability of skilled talent. By bringing these strands together, the study offers founders, investors, and policymakers a clearer view of what allows a startup ecosystem to actively support entrepreneurial success rather than merely host it.

Key Takeaways

Drawing on literature from across the 2012 to 2024 period, this study synthesises the drivers of entrepreneurial success in startup ecosystems. Government policy, financial incentives, and infrastructure form the foundation; incubation through mentorship, funding, and networking supports early ventures; and regional factors such as risk culture, skilled talent, and market access shape how well an ecosystem performs.

  • The study examines entrepreneurial success as the product of interacting forces, government support, incubation, regional characteristics, and collaborative networks, rather than any single factor acting alone in driving outcomes.
  • Synthesising empirical and conceptual work from the 2012 to 2024 period, it identifies financial incentives, infrastructure, entrepreneur-friendly regulation, and effective government policy as foundations of a thriving startup environment.
  • Incubation proves critical for early-stage ventures, with mentorship, accessible funding, and networking opportunities emerging as the facilitators that help young companies establish themselves and survive in the market.
  • Regional conditions, including cultural attitudes towards risk, proximity to markets, and the availability of skilled talent, significantly shape entrepreneurial growth and the overall maturity of an ecosystem.
