Environmental sustainability has become a strategic priority for organizations, yet a persistent gap remains between the sustainability commitments companies state and the environmental outcomes they actually deliver. This chapter proposes Sustainable Stewardship Leadership (SSL), a behavioral and systems-based framework for how leaders can embed environmental stewardship into an organization's culture and systems rather than treating it as a compliance exercise.
Drawing on sustainability leadership, green transformational leadership, stewardship theory, and systems thinking, the authors trace how leadership shapes environmental outcomes through value-based influence, behavioral modeling, structural alignment, and community empowerment, offering leaders and policymakers a route toward lasting environmental transformation.
For boards and executive teams, the chapter's implication is direct: stated commitments do not close the delivery gap on their own, leadership behavior does.
